This book is part of the curriculum for our newly-launched Critical Thinking Workshops! She opens his eyes to something a lot more valuable than getting things just "right." Combining the spareness of fable with the potency of parable, Peter Reynolds shines a bright beam of light on the need to kindle and tend our creative flames with care. Luckily for Ramon, though, his little sister, Marisol, sees the world differently. A single reckless remark by Ramon's older brother, Leon, turns Ramon's carefree sketches into joyless struggles. But in one split second, all that changes. A creative spirit learns that thinking "ish-ly" is far more wonderful than "getting it right" in this gentle new fable from the creator of the award-winning picture book THE DOT. ![]()

![]() What makes Benioff’s take on this tale so special is his deep trust in the ordinariness of it all, and the persistence of his supporting cast in thinking, as even your best friends will, that this night is all about them. There’ll be the requisite tender moments with Monty’s father and Naturelle the obligatory scene in which Monty reminds Uncle Blue, his supplier, that he hasn’t rolled over on him yet and doesn’t intend to Monty’s appeal to his old buddies to take care of the pit bull he rescued and nursed back to health and trust four years ago and of course the after-dinner drinks with Monty’s nearest and dearest. ![]() And when you come right down to it, there’s nothing very unusual about Monty-who started dealing back in his school days at Campbell-Sawyer but still dreams his childhood dream of growing up to be a fireman-or of his last day and night of freedom either. The Feds knocked polite as you pleased on Monty Brogan’s door, showed their warrant to Monty and his live-in Naturelle Rosario, and within minutes had found enough to put him away for seven years. Evangeline is tempted by a "bad boy/tortured soul" figure named Jacks who is controlling and aloof and secretive and she spends much of the book trying to figure him out. In fact, all of the romance has an edge of malice to it that's well worth discussing with teen romance fans who are just starting relationships of their own. There's a passionate kiss that turns into a near-strangulation from a man controlled by a curse, and the main character, Evangeline, dressed only in a slip, writhes in a bed, fighting new-vampire urges to drink blood, with a man lying on top of her, holding her down. Of note is the escalation of sexual violence. There are a few deaths - one by stabbing and another from a vampire bite - and some injuries from arrows, knives, and lashes to the back that are all healed with magic. Expect the same level of violence in this sequel. Parents need to know that The Ballad of Never After is the sequel to Once Upon a Broken Heart, a spin-off of the popular Caraval trilogy by Stephanie Garber. ![]() ![]() ![]() Their bond had no restraints: they could do as they pleased, knowing that the love between them remained the same. Nothing escapes the realms of the letter, and what goes on in there can be kept a secret, hidden from the judging eyes of society. ![]() One of the means for their relationship to unfold is through letter: it is an intimate space where feelings can be truly expressed. For them, a dinner party or a social gathering were perfect opportunities for their relationship to grow: a chance to see their loved one. Virginia Woolf and Vita Sackville-West are an example of this. It’s not easy to suppress feelings, thus the traces of the attachment start to appear on the margins of everyday life, in the gaps between what’s expected. Love relationships that don’t comply with society’s hegemonic standards have been censored and harassed for ages and as a result, these relationships are concealed from the public for fear of rejection or repudiation. ![]() ![]() ![]() Told from the alternating perspectives of Hannah and Aaron, the setup doesn’t really allow for much surprise: the key players are identified at the start, the premise of the novel is outlined in the synopsis. It’s also where new-boy Aaron has been dragged along by his new “friends”, the Basketball boys, even though it’s not remotely his scene. It’s where Hannah and Katie, two best friends, are expecting to pull. It’s where the Darwinian forces of social interaction are at their strongest: weeding out the weakest of the pack and using them as sacrificial lambs for the entertainment of those at the top of their game. ![]() (It’s about a whole lot more, including family and friendship, but it just didn’t have the same ring to it!) In Hannah’s world, there’s school and the park on Fridays evenings, when anyone who’s anyone meets up for flirtation, banter and the occasional (who am I kidding?!) hookup. Thankfully, this is not the case with Non Pratt’s Trouble, a story of sex, love and teenage pregnancy. When you know an author personally, it’s always a little scary to review their new book for fear that it’s a really terrible book or you just didn’t get on with it. ![]() ![]() ![]() Mo Willems uses speech bubbles throughout the book to draw attention to Gerald and Piggie’s words!
